| A grateful Thank You, to all of the
contributors for having the insight, time, and talent to organize this study
skills website. Your generosity is most appreciated. I am an older student and
found the information contained there to be most invaluable. I feel more confident
in how I will approach the coming semester. 12/23/02
I just wanted to commend you on the well-thought-out,
intelligent and inspirational study guide you have put together on the Web. I am a
returning college student and did a search over the Internet for "studying more
effectively," which ultimately led to your page. I honestly don't think I've seen
a better site yet, so I thought it appropriate to write and tell you "thank you"
for a wonderful site, and I will be coming back often. 12/17/02
from United Arab Emirates... I want to compliment you and those
who have helped you put this together. I think you've done an outstanding job
synthesizing the large amounts of info into a very useful and convenient resource.
Many thanks. I'll be sharing this with my students and have already done so with
my colleagues. 12/9/02
I am a French teacher .... We currently have a school
improvement plan to increase our students' reading comprehension and critical
thinking skills. Monday 25 November 2002, I have been asked to present
several reading strategies to my co-workers at our in-service meeting. While
I am fairly well versed in most of them, SQR3 was worrying me. Finding your
site presenting so clearing and concisely this reading strategy has allowed me to
breath a sigh of relief. At the bottom of the page, you have said that permission
is granted for using this information for legitimate purposes without having to
ask. But, as a courtesy, I wanted to let you know of my intention and
gratitude. 11/24/02
I stumbled upon your site while searching for study skills
information for my classes (found at the University of St. Thomas site), and just
had to send an e-mail telling you that I am in awe! At the very bottom of
one of the pages, I saw your name and was simply going to send you a thank you
note for the study site; instead, I was taken to your own personal information,
and let me say -- you are amazing. You've led a life that most dream of or
fear keeps them from doing it. I enjoyed reading some of the Quaker and related
tracts as well. My intentions are to return to your site when I have more time
(probably over holiday breaks) and continue reading. Anyway,
I've digressed. Thank you for a study guide and strategies site that will
make my life as a VERY busy teacher a little less stressful. May you have continued success! 11/24/02
I am a director of disease management in a physician's office.
We have decided to join forces with our local school district in an effort to
increase the students' opportunities at college preparatory-type research writing.
In an effort to get some help in making my presentation to the high school
principal, I came across your WEB site. I have never seen anything like it. The
clarity with which you put forth educational and learning principles is
unparalleled in anything I have found to date. As a former public high school
English teacher, and as a part-time teacher in our small Christian school, I have
spent many years looking for those little extras that will help in the classroom.
Your site is so full of "little extras" that I'm tempted to say "the search is
over." May God bless your endeavors. 11/21/02
I really like the study skills page--it's really helping me. I
would give it a 100! 11/12/02
Your Study Guide and strategies web site is great! Thanks
so much for the resource. I plan to use parts of it for a junior high study
skills minicourse. 11/21/02
No feedback for improvement but rather a rave for a well-done
site. Thanks for freely contributing
to student success everywhere. We
will be incorporating some of your study guides into our College Success
Strategies class for high school students who are attending our community college. 11/5/02
This is some of the best
material I've seen on the subject of learning. Compile the book and I'll purchase
the first copy. Thanks for the very helpful site. 11/6/02
I became aware of your site about a year ago when Refdesk listed
it as their site of the day and clicked on it. I have looked over parts of it
several times and find it quite useful. I am looking into setting up some links to
other useful sites like yours. 10/22/02
Thank you so much for creating and making available your awesome
study strategies web site. I am an instructor at ... Community College in and I am
so appreciative of these materials. The program I teach ... is for students 16-20
who have dropped out of high school. They take two quarters of study skills,
career exploration, etc. and then can begin to take college classes in a
professional/technical program. Thanks again for your work! 10/20/02
Hi Joe.... I'm at the faculty... teaching graduate courses
in student development and leadership in higher education. We have consistently
wrestled with the range of skills students bring to us....and often remember as
faculty that some of the best foundational skills related to writing, reading etc.
were in courses well before graduate school or even college. The materials you've
pulled together and so generously make available are simply an incredible resource
for me as a teacher and for students as learners. I can only begin to imagine the
effort that went into the web site...(having occasionally sought to pull together
some materials...and feeling the tug of time demands related to the content of
teaching and research). While we strongly suggested folks check into the site
early in the semester, I'm now getting folks realizing they need it...I'm grateful
it's there for me to refer them and their grateful for a straightforward starting
point in addressing a variety of study, reading, writing and thinking skills.
Thanks much. 10/4/02
Good Evening from Monterey, California! I am new to the teaching
profession and am developing my first lesson plans. I have found the St. Thomas
website more than helpful! I also found your website delightful. Well, back to
developing a Unit Plan for the Merchant of Venice!! Sweet Dreams from (once a
native northeastern Minnesota person). 9/26/02
I am writing to congratulate you on the excellent study skills
resources ... I am a 33-year old Risk Analyst working with an international bank
in UAE, in the Middle East. I like to learn every day and take a lot of distance
learning courses, besides drawing from an ever expanding personal library. In this
context, your website provides invaluable resources on 'how to learn'. Without
understanding the techniques of learning, the student could fail in his role.
Thank you for providing guidance in this important area. 9/25/02
I coordinate programs for our ESL students and happened upon
your website through NCTE. Thank you for an incredibly valuable service. I am
emailing the site to all my ESL teachers. They will be thrilled. We have 23
different languages (at last count) in our District. Coordinating and
communicating with regular classroom teachers and parents is always a challenge.
This site will be a great help for our older students. Thank you, thank you, thank
you. 9/5/02
my name is johnny and I have a class assignment to cover
a lot of test taking strategies that I can find on the internet. I am then suppose
to use the information that I have found in a power point slide show presentation,
and then present this to the class. I am asking for your consent, for me to use
the information 9/11/02
Thank you for making your study guides available to educational
settings. I am currently working on a project with the U. S. Bureau of the Census'
Census Corporate University (CCU). The project provides continuing education and
professional development for Census Department employees through partnering with
local universities and colleges. We plan to incorporate many of your very useful
study tips, with some modifications, into the CCU Student Handbook. The specific
documents we plan to draw from are: Learning to Learn, Effective Habits for
Effective Study, Test Preparation, Organizing for Tests, Taking Notes from a
Textbook, and Ten Tips for Test Taking. Thanks for your generosity in making
your work available to others. 9/10/02
I am educator working with teachers in an effort to improve
teaching and learning in the school. Our data show that we have some serious
deficits. We a low-performing school that is beginning to show promise.
Thank you so much for this valuable site. Since were are trying to teach
reading and writing across the curriculum, I share this site and some specific
items to teachers. With sincere appreciation 8/31/02
Joe, I am helping my college son look up info on the SQ3R method
for a psychology paper. We found the Study Guide and Strategies from St. Thomas...
I work with adult students at a small Methodist university and the Study Guide is
a good resource. Thanks. 8/31/02

(link request for) nursing students at the University of Texas
Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. I
Like the information you have collected and I really think it would be helpful to
the students I work with. Thank you
for your help. 8/26/02
You have done such an outstanding job of compiling study
resources. As a high school counselor, I stumbled upon your site years ago and
continue to frequent it often for helpful materials to share with my students
(those still in high school and those making the transition to college). I also
recently began working with the Texas Virtual School and would love to link to
your site. I know your site reads "No request to link is necessary."; however, I
would feel better with your written permission. The Texas Virtual School offers a
small beginner course to orient students to the online environment. In that
course, I would like for students to read the materials on your site for later
discussion on proper study techniques. Your site is so comprehensive that I know
students could benefit from it. 8/25/02 Requests do help track usage!--joe
I just finished printing out your entire web site on learning
strategies!! I am a high school teacher who has developed a semester long course
devoted to teaching learning strategies- the information on your site will be so
helpful. Thank you!! 8/12/02
First of all I want to thank you you these great pages, I have
been going through different sections, and enjoyed finding new ideas on how to
improve my study methods (extremely useful as I took up studies again after a
break of 10 years). I especially liked the pages about mind-maps, I knew them
before, but got some tips like using only capital letters that will help, another
section I really enjoyed were the tests about the learning orientation. 8/11/02
I just spend about an hour and a half on your site, and think it
is terrific. I found a lot of information I needed for my studies in
communications. I live in Toronto Canada, and work as a multimedia designer.. your
site is a great resource. thanks for doing all this work! 8/7/02
This is a wonderful page. Succinct and full of good information.
Thank you, 8/6/02
This is an awesome reference page!! It would be nice if it were
easier to find. I had to search on "How to write a persuasive essay". Using
"Persuasive essay" as the search criteria did not return this page to me. 8/2/02
from South Africa: This sounds very teacher orientated to
me! Why not get involved in an argument with the teacher. Politeness does not mean
subservience. Is there not another way to present the relationship between learner
and teacher? 7/26/02
I am so pleased that I found your Study Guides and Strategies
web site. I am currently participating in an accelerated certification
program at West Texas A&M in Canyon, TX to prepare for my Texas ExCet tests this
fall. I will teach 6th grade Math/Science and Health this coming school
year. Part of my course work this summer requires me to plan a unit that
covers Social Studies/Language Arts and Technology. The unit must also meet the
guidelines stated in the Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills. I feel it is very
important to teach my 6th graders study skills and time management skills in order
to prepare them for entry into Junior High. I also want to give them skills
that will last a lifetime. The unit I am currently working on involves
introducing, presenting and practicing the above skills to my 6th graders.

You don't know how much your essay writing study guides helped.
My son is a senior in High School. He needed help in writing an essay. I went
to his teacher for help on how to write a persuasive essay, but got very little
help. I asked friends and got similar results. I was desperate and didn't know
where to go for help so that I could help my son. Just by luck I found this site.
You explained how to write the essay so clearly and was so easy to follow. Thank
you so much. 7/7/02
This website is an incredible tool - no one teaches our young
students "how" to study. I have two boys in high school, and I wanted to help them
develop better study habits. They score well on EOG's, but struggle with the day
to day projects and homework assignments. Thank you for help. 7/6/02
I am an assistant/tutor (at
Lord Fairfax Community College, VA). I am compiling a folder for tutors to use
with their students. I found EVERYTHING and then some here on your web page. It is
excellent....absolutely spectacular. I will recommend this site to many
people. 7/1/02
...I am a doctoral student in psychology at the University of
Ottawa. Over the past year, with a team of tutors, I have been developing
the Centre for Academic Success. The purpose of the Centre is to help
University students whose marks are slipping to develop study skills and
strategies. The goal of the Centre is not only to help students to attain
higher marks but, more importantly, to help them achieve their dreams.
I must congratulate you on your magnificent web site. It
contains a plentitude of very pertinent and highly accessible information.
At present, I am developing a brochure for our Centre. This brochure
includes the themes of our weekly workshops--many of which overlap with the themes
presented in the Guides on your web site... 6/10/02
I am from Australia. I was on the internet looking at sites to
help me with my essay writing, as I just received my mid term English exam back
and didn't do quite as well as I would have liked. I was at the university's
site about writing and I saw that you created the site and I would just like to
commend you on great site and how I found very useful. I have always found writing
a difficult task, but your tips have made it all that much easier for me to write
essays. thank-you. 6/16/02
I just found the Study Guides and Strategies web site-What a
tremendous resource! I own a small education company specializing in tutoring. I
am interested in creating curriculum and coursework based on the guides. What is
the proper protocol to utilize the materials? 6/12/02 Ed:

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you
profusely for your wonderful website. I am a private tutor of kids from
elementary school through college, in every subject, and have found your website
of enormous assistance in teaching these babes the process of, and more to the
point, the joy of learning. The site is beyond impressive. Thank you
for your effort and perspective. 5/29/02

Thank you so much for the study guides and strategies site. It
has been immensely valuable to me throughout the last year and I frequently
recommend it to others. 5/13/02
You’re site is awesome...My name is Kevin and have gone back to
finish my bachelor’s degree and am also taking a 10 week intensive course to
certify for Oracle DBA. I have your site not only bookmarked but on my IE
toolbar! I might e-mail you some suggestions if I see
anything that could be improved on, however it’s simply an exceptional resource
for learning. I don’t believe I have seen any other web site like it. I also, like
the fact you include important topics such as stress management and ADHD
information! 5/11/02
Thank You, your study skills and related web site links helped
me put my project together. This page is allot of help. You might need
to put more language translate sites on it. 5/1/02
Your site is a great resource. Thank you for all your work to
put it together. I especially like the multiple language feature and plan to pass
it on to my international students. 4/8/02
I am a student at the University of Texas at Austin. I stumbled
across your online study guide today by typing "Study Guide" into Google... I did
not actually expect to get any good hits, but your website was the first link. It
is better than any published study guide I have ever read. You have done a
tremendous job gathering great tips for studying and presenting them in a
conscience and accessible format (usually study guides stretch out each point they
make... I think so that the authors can publish multiple books that say the same
thing but in a slightly different convoluted way). Thank you for your contribution
to academia through your online study guide. If possible, please e-mail me when
any changes or additions are made to the guide. 4/11/02
Just had to comment, the site is excellent. I am a mature
student, working on a degree at a distance, married with three very sociable
children aged 8, 7. and 5. and I'm working, As you may well imagine,
planning is all important to me. Its not so much planning as juggling...

which I provide as a link for students here

I just wanted to let you know that the self-motivation exercise
was very effective, and it helped me tremendously! Thank you! 4/17/02
First let me congratulate all your team for the good inspiring
and professional content and display of this site. It was very helpful for me to
read the guide, do the test for growing in my life. I have also meditation every
day and I find your words in complete support with meditation... 4/15/02
I want to thank you for your massive, extremely helpful study
guides... I use them extensively in our school for special needs (from
extreme to existing only in the parent's mind) kids (all ages) in Bangkok,
Thailand. 4/09/02
Thank you for creating and maintaining this website. It is
helpful to my children, and to the children that I work with. 4/08/02
I am reading this from the city Adelaide in the state South
Australia, Australia. I arrived here from a link on my Universities study support
pages. I have studied web design in the past. Your page is well laid out and
illustrates its message clearly. Thank you for the valuable resource. 3/30/02
It was a perfect "Find" tonight. .... I look forward to
thoroughly reading your study guide for both myself and my students. Your efforts
are much appreciated - 3/29/02
Your site is fantastic!! Thank you. Have your ever given any
thought to creating one for children in grades 1 to 6 and also for students in
grades 7 to 9. I think it is very much needed and you obviously would do a
great many children and their parents a great service in considering this
request.3/27/02
I'm writing to request permission to excerpt and adapt some
content on test-taking on the St. Thomas site. I'd like to share your practical
tips with nursing students in the American Nursing Student newsletter... 3/26/02
Thank you, your short tips were helpful. 3/19/02
Using this web site has help me in many ways, thank you. 3/17/02
I surfed to your site and found your excellent pointers on
concentration ... I am a mental focus and concentration enthusiast... 3/26/02
... I am an assistant principal ... in New Jersey. I came
across the website for test preparation ,... and was very interested in the
preparation parts of the website. I was wondering who I would speak to, to get
permission to print and make photocopies of several of these pages such as oral
exam skills and provide them to the 60 students signed up for my study skills
class on Saturdays. This study skills class that I have developed is part of my
Doctoral Dissertation and is a total of 3 Saturdays at 3 hours per day. 3/9/02
My daughter does very well with creative writing, and thus is
having a terrible time writing a persuasive essay. THANK YOU so much for
putting this outline on the Web, to help struggling students. You have done us a
service and we appreciate it. 3/2/02
Just wanted to thank you for your wonderful page. I'm just
returning to University after a five year absence and your page has helped me with
my approach to studying. My A and B+ in my first 2 classes attest to this. 2/28/02
I am writing to suggest that you change the tone of the
"avoiding procrastination" page to a more positive one. I recommend to whomever is
in charge of writing your study guide pages to check out the University of Texas's
page on procrastination. I think it gives a lot of helpful and tangible things
that a person could do to stop procrastinating. A procrastinator knows they're
doing it. U of
Texas' page shows them how to change.
2/12/02 done!

What a wonderful and complete resource. I bless you for creating
it. I'm returning to school for a masters degree after 25 years and was looking
for tips on the whole "study" thing. Bingo! You're the best! Keep up the great
work. 2/22/02
You have created a wonderful resource for writers! 2/27/02
I am in south Georgia - noticed you haven't been here yet! - and
I am taking an online Master's class through Grambling State University in
Louisiana. While doing research for my students on online study skills sites, I
came across you page and just wanted to say thanks! Your site is wonderful - I
especially love the multi-language approach. We are getting more and more
international students. Got anyone who can do Farsi? Our community has a couple of
Persian families and probably will have more in the future. Anyway, love your
quotes on religious beliefs. Love you page. Thanks for being you! 2/15/02
A message of appreciation for your concise and comprehensive web
site. Your material reinforces the basic assumptions I teach from and gives
me help in summarizing concepts for the adults I work with who are returning to
Community College here in Nova Scotia, Canada to achieve their high school
diploma. Thanks for your efforts at pulling this all together and making it
available. 2/5/02
Excellent job! I'm writing a paper on the study skills of the
adult learner. Your site has it all! It was a great help in getting me started!
1/27/02
I am writing a research paper on how to study effectively and I
am very grateful I found your website. It is great! It will not only help me in my
research paper but also in my studies! Keep up the good work! And again-Thank
you!1/24/02
Greetings from Oklahoma! As a parent of an early
elementary child (3rd grade, 8 years old) with ADHD, I surfed to find resources to
help her (yes, her) with study habits, and came upon your link. How
wonderful to find a site promoting study habits. Even greater, a site for
ADHD students who need to develop study habits. Please bear in mind
that I'm new to finding things on the 'net. So there may be things I can use on
the 'net with our daughter. I found your site to be informative and full of
items, suggestions for an older age. I struggle to find basics for younger
developmental needs. Specifically, an 'assignments' page. No
frills or distractions. I located one ... but there were too many
confusing extras. I do believe you are on a great track for helping ADHDers.
Some families just aren't up 'there' chronologically. We need thing to reach
our younger kids who desperately need tools to make learning a **positive** fun
experience again (not an extended pre-school type approach); a
successful approach! 1/22/02
As a middle school counselor who is always in search of great
web sites to recommend to my students and their parents/guardians, as well as to
my faculty and staff, thank you for this great site 1/20/02
...in school no one ever taught me how to learn or study. Your
information will be a great help and I can't wait to start teaching my son this
stuff so that when he goes to school he'll have a much easier time than me. Thanks
again for the great resource and a place to start if I want more. 1/18/02
I am a Chinese medical graduate and now doing some medical
research in Canada . Thank you for your website about learning and studying method
. I really like it . Thank you for your contribution to it and spread it out all
over the world. All the best ! 1/12/02
This web site will be a very helpful tool in my beginnings in my
path of education. Thank you 1/8/02
What a wonderful (useful, worthwhile...) web site you've
created. I'll use it as a prep - period refuge from the chaotic school week

This website will be a very helpful tool in my beginnings in my
path of education. Thank you (from a community college student) 1/9/02
I just recently found your website and
I have to say it is extremely helpful. There are so many wonderful tips that
are greatly appreciated. In fact I have compiled a list of specific
strategies and tips that I think will be very useful in my many more years of
college. I have told all of my friends about the site. Thank you so
much for creating it! 1/22/02 |
Your website is great! My son is a
spatial learner, he will be 11 in 2 weeks. We are struggling with the typical
items -- writing, spelling, concentration. It is refreshing to see your site, I
have printed some items for him so he can visit the website. It is always good for
him to be able to see it from someone else, rather than have me preaching at him.
Thanks again for creating this wonderful site. God Bless You 12/5/02
Just a quick note of thanks for a very well done web site. I was
searching for info to help my freshmen in high school students and this was
perfect! I appreciate you posting it for all of us. 12/04/02
Just wanted to thank you for including the useful link in your
response to the study habit colloquy--I'll include it next semester in a
composition course .. I'm developing in part through utter frustration.
12/02/02
Just sending you a thank you for the great website. It is a
resource that I like to browse through for quick reference and to prompt thinking.
I will forward to my peers. Thank you again for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
11/4/02
You should show examples on a
specific type of essay. For example, I am looking to write a persuasive
essay. You may have an example that shows what the first paragraph should
include, the second, and so on. That would be very helpful. Other than
that, it was very helpful! Thanks! 12/04/02 ed: we do not use
examples on this Guide to avoid prejudicing the application, as well as
creativity, of the learner.
Just wanted to say thanks. The information on study guides will
be very helpful to me. 12/04/02
Totally awesome site. Our librarian put me onto your site.
I teach at an alternative school. I will use them. 11/6/02
Just sending you a thank you for the great website. It is a
resource that I like to browse through for quick reference and to prompt thinking.

WOW! I was so impressed with the website on study skills...! I
am a 48 year old first year teacher (went back to college when my husband died 5
years ago) so I am mature enough to realize the importance of organization and
understanding your own learning style. I am trying to design an after school
program for 6th graders at my school - inner city school - immense need for this.
I have been trying to print out your stuff, bring it down to a 6th grade level and
create a powerpoint presentation for this class. I'm running out of time - want to
start next week - and am wondering if you have a more simplified version of this
stuff you could share with me - or even better - a powerpoint of it that you could
email me! If not thanks so much just for having this available on the internet -
this class would not have happened this year if I had not found your site as a
resource - thanks again 10/28/02
I just wanted to tell you that I am using your site in my 7th
grade Study Skills course and your pages (all of them) are clearly written and
wonderful--the best collection of advice I've found, arranged in an appealingly
visual way on the page. It has been helpful for you to reiterate points (like to
review material early and often) repeatedly on different pages so that students
get the point that repetition is an important part of study strategy. In addition,
the pages on cramming are refreshing. I tell students that there are two separate
goals: one is to do better on tests and get the desired grades, but the other is
to have long-term use of knowledge, and THAT is the real goal. Repetition is seen
as a waste of time to them. The only thing I could possibly suggest is some
material on how the brain works--how it remembers things and how diet, sleep, and
exercise impact brain function. Kids (and college students) blow off that stuff.
Perhaps the material is there and I just haven't located it on your web site.
Thank you for sharing your pages with us. It is now the best source I have for
written material on test prep and test taking. 10/16/02
I just stumbled onto your website, "Study Guides and Strategies"
through Saint Louis University. My husband and I are transitioning our two
daughters into public high school after eight years of home schooling.
Because our teaching style has been typically informal and student-driven, we
needed something to help our girls handle classroom learning, time management,
studying techniques, and test taking tips. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I've forwarded your URL to our home school assistance program administrator for
insertion into our monthly newsletter. 10/10/02

Please see the words “in

I have found your website very insightful and useful.
Well done St. Thomas! 10/16/02 corrected with appreciation...
Your "study guides and strategies" is very useful for me.
I wonder if there is a printout version, because I don't have internet access all
the time, especially when I am out or waiting bus... If there is a printout
version, I can read wherever I am, to take the most use of time. Thanks a
lot, that's a really great material. 10/12/02

I wanted to say thank you for such a helpful website. I have
been needing help after taking the national acupuncture exam twice. I had hired a
tutor and what I paid for this web site covered for just taking time to print the
pages. I graduated from acupuncture school in June of this year. I have always had
trouble with exams and testing. I again thank you for the site... This site
will make a big difference in my study for the exam 10/10/02
I have been teaching study skills to senior students for sixteen
years. I have spent hours researching learning strategies and in turn, in
developing an active, creative approach to teach effective techniques. There
are always resources I come across which 'take my breath away." Yours is one.
Congratulations on your work ! Your gracious willingness to share your knowledge
to the benefit of other students is commendable. Blessings. 10/5/02
Thank you so much for your web pages. I am cramming for an
interview at a study centre and your pages are invaluable thank you so much
10/5/02
I just came across your website and I'm hoping it will be
helpful to me in teaching myself and my family to strive for excellence in their
education and to accomplish their goals for life. Thank you for the information.

just in the process of updating my study skills teaching for our
MSc courses and came across your wonderful pages very VERY good stuff - content,
design, educational philosophy I will set up some links from our course intranet

I don't know how I found your website but, I'm glad I did.
I teach Learning Disabled and/or Emotionally Disabled middle school students.
My first class of the day is called Learning Activities, where I teach learning
strategies, study skills, test-taking skills, etc. I have adapted a few of
your articles to my students' reading levels because these are kids who NEED
direct instruction in those areas. 10/3/02
A hearty THANK YOU for the knowledge on the site!! I am a
free-lance journalist, and my latest project is writing for a teen magazine. Not
feeling a "call" toward teenagers, I was stumped for the two months that I had to
turn something in. I stumbled upon St. Thomas and found rich resources to share
with the teens... about studying 9/29/02
I'm a speech therapist in Calumet City, Illinois. I
teach grades 3rd thru 8th and I have 4 classes with students with many special ed.
concerns. This particular district is very poor and about 90% of our
students are on federally funded breakfast and lunch programs. Our school is
currently under academic watch and we currently are undergoing a School
Improvement program. As I teach and observe my students, it's obvious that
they don't know "how" to study. I ran across your program today, LEARNING TO
LEARN and was very impressed. I started to print it but quickly realized
that I need tons and tons of paper. Is this program available in book
or booklet form? Can I purchase it at a bookstore or from your university?
Is there a possibility of your sending it to m? I'd like to study it
and then present it to my principal. I'm sure that our staff would love that
I could teach our students the mechanics of studying and then their scores would
and could improve. 9/26/02 Publishing under consideration
Wow, I stumbled on to your Study Guides and Strategies site, and
I am truly impressed (happens very rarely.) I am going to put a link to your page
on my new web site, if you have no objections. (I know that it says that no link
request is needed, but I would consider it an impropriety not to even mention it.
I spent the summer trying (note the operative word TRYING) to learn how to build
and maintain a web page for my students. I am still not in control, but that has
never stopped me, and my seventh grade students love my site, (One of the many
reasons I adore them) even on the occasions where I accidentally destroy parts of
it! I have only perused a small part of your site, but I appreciate your
(American) English Spelling page and teach principles very similar to yours. For
the "silent" e rule, I teach the V-C-E pattern (vowel-consonant-silent e) and find
that it is one of the cornerstones frequently overlooked, along with other
spelling rules. My understanding is that 87% of the English language follows the
rules; one would expect spelling to be far better, unless, of course, students are
not taught the rules. Hmmmmm. Am I the only one to note a direct proportional
relationship between the ages of my junior colleagues to their expertise in
spelling, grammar, mechanics, etc.? Thank you, in advance, and once again,
my congratulations for a valuable and note-worthy site. 9/21/02
I teach Beginning Algebra at ... University in Chicago,
Illinois. I did a search on Study Skills and discovered your website. I
think it's great! Being a little web savy, I already knew to follow the steps
stated in your 'Webtruth' section to evaluate your site. I plan to use the site as
a guide in a study skills workshop I am conducting in a couple of weeks. Thanks a
lot for the time and effort you put into creating and maintaining this site! Hope
I can get others on my team to use it as a reference as well. 9/10/02
Thank you for making your study guides available to educational
settings. I am currently working with Windwalker Corporation in McLean, Virginia
on a project with the U. S. Bureau of the Census' Census Corporate University (CCU).
The project provides continuing education and professional development for Census
Department employees through partnering with local universities and colleges.
We plan to incorporate many of your very useful study tips, with some
modifications, into the CCU Student Handbook. The specific documents we plan to
draw from are: Learning to Learn, Effective Habits for Effective Study, Test
Preparation, Organizing for Tests, Taking Notes from a Textbook, and Ten Tips for
Test Taking. Thanks for your generosity in making your work available to others.

I am a middle school teacher
... in West Palm Beach, Florida. I have explored your Web site extensively
and can appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into it. I have used
information from this site a lot already. I just wanted to thank you for
your diligence in preparing such a useful resource. I am definitely going to
make sure that our school creates a link off of our school page and I intend to
create one off of my own class web page. 9/10/02
Will you allow me to reprint "Effective Habits for Effective
Studies" in The Oklahoma Society of CPAs student newsletter. I am always look for
good, motivational study tips to provide for my audience. 9/6/02 Yes!
I am just writing to say that your Study Guides and Strategies
website is great. I was referred to it by an National Council for Teachers
of English mailing and I am very eager to put it to good use with my ninth-grade
students (I am a high school English teacher in Connecticut). I actually
teach on a team (like the middle school philosophy, we have our students for two
years) and we are attempting to motivate students (it's an urban school) and get
them to invest in themselves and their education ... part of this includes
teaching them "how to do school" ... Your site, I have a feeling, will be an
outstanding resource. Thank you!! 9/4/02
Thank you SO VERY MUCH for that miraculously complete webpage
for study skills. I teach middle and secondary English methods, and your work is a
gift. 9/4/02
I just came across your website and I'm hoping it will be
helpful to me in teaching myself and my family to strive for excellence in their
education and to accomplish their goals for life. Thank you for the information.

Just wanted to send a quick thank you for composing your study
guide page. I find it very helpful in keeping me on track. It's amazing how I know
most of what you propose but yet so easily forget sometimes as I get myself in a
knot. I keep it bookmarked and look back on it often for inspiration and a
little bit of "Duh I know that's what I should do." ;-) 8/26/02
I just wanted to say thank you for your useful site. I teach 5th
grade Reading in Dallas, Texas. I found your study guides and strategies page
invaluable. I plan to use quite a few of them with my students (with your
permission, of course). I only wish I had them when I was in college! 8/18/02
I am teaching part-time at a community college in Illinois, and
I intend to refer my students to your site this fall. It is excellent and should
prove to be of great value to those willing consult it, and take the advise to
heart. Thank you for the considerable time and effort you put into compiling this
treasure trove of useful information. 8/8/02
I appreciate the work you have done at your site. I teach high
school senior college prep English, junior/senior Humanities, and a computer-based
Sophmore English class (new this year). Over the past five years I have
accumulated a listing of websites (stored on eXcell) to help my students learn,
focusing on the how as well as the what. The best or the most relevant of these
make my webpage. In all my wanderings, yours is the finest site I have found....

Solving Math Word Problems This is page is perfect. I have
been looking to 2 days to find this information to help my son understand word
problems. Now I can show him what specific words want you to do in the problem.
You are an angel for taking the time to put this on a web site. 8/7/02
Hello. I just came across your site today. I am an 8th grade
learning support teacher. Although this site seems to have been written with the
ESL student in mind, it is also wonderful for those who need extra support. I will
be giving all of my students this site. 7/29/02

your web site has resources that are useful to our students and we would like to
create some non-framed hyperlinks with these resources. 7/26/02
I am a writing instructor at The Columbia Gorge Community
College in The Dalles, Oregon, and I want to congratulate you on your website. I
print out the "Study Guides and Strategies" page and give it to all of my
students, for it is amazing/depressing how many of them--young and old--haven't a
clue about how to absorb and retain information. Some even have ADHD, so I was
glad to see that link also. 6/11/02
This is excellent information (motivation Guide) ... it really
works. I am the assistant youth director at my church. This has been very helpful.
I am always looking for ways to motivate our youth to succeed. ... Thank you and
keep up the good work. 7/19/02

I am writing, on behalf of the Open University of Hong Kong
Library, to request your approval for us to link up the below website in our
Electronic Library and for our users to use the information in the website. In
2000, the success of the Electronic Library is recognized worldwide when the
Electronic Library project won an international IT award, the Stockholm Challenge
Award, which was jointly organized by the City Government of Stockholm and the
European Commission. With this success, we continue to provide the quality service
and to enrich its content by including more valuable resources from the Internet.
After we have reviewed the content of the (Study Guides), we find that it contains
information that is very useful to our users and we believe that it would be one
of the very popular resources in our Electronic Library. 6/14/02
You have a wonderful site. Thank you for permission to freely
copy. I'm using the info to help me tutor a young girl, 8th grade, who is
attention deficit & more infrequently a set mischievous twins. She is a joy to
tutor, they are a challenge. 5/5/02
In short and crisp speaking its just :-

A few days ago I would have qualified myself as a lazy,
unmotivated student, meandering through classes without any studying or complete
assignments, just capable enough to pass out of classes with a B average. Until
that time, I was neither disgusted nor pleased with myself. My academic persona
was at a stalemate, and learning in general just seemed a stagnate, trivial
process. I will admit that I was turned off to education for many reasons, namely
by the rampart cheating system thriving on my campus as well as a few
disenchanting, disappointing, and destructive relationships with a handful of
educators. Your collection of study guides has saved me from the abyss of
educational despair. You have successfully shed light on things I once found
inconsequential and meaningless and have organized it in such a way that begs to
not only to be read, but enjoyed and understood. A million times thank you.
thank you. 5/11/02
I am a Physical Education Teacher in South Australia and I am
working on the development of a study, revision and examination guide for Seniors.
School students in the Physical Education area - something that hasn't been done
before. I would like to use some of your material and I am seeking your permission
to do so. If you would like more background on what I propose to do I would be
more than happy to let you know. basically it is a guide that has a section on
preparing for exams, reading questions, planning responses, interpreting diagrams
and past exam questions. 5/6/02
I am... a student from India. I really was very down and nervous
today about my studies and came to the Internet to get help. I saw your Web
site and I thank you for creating it. It has really inspired me, and
encouraged to study . I will use the tips and strategies suggested by you. I
have my exams from 21st May. I have had a reputation of being the worst
student in college, but with your kind guidance I bet it's about to change. Thank
you again, yours faithfully 4/19/02
This is a very good site; keep it developed 4/16/02
Thank you for making this. This really
helps me. 4/12/02
I am a student at the University of Texas at Austin. I stumbled
across your online study guide today by typing "Study Guide" into Google... I did
not actually expect to get any good hits, but your website was the first link. It
is better than any published study guide I have ever read. You have done a
tremendous job gathering great tips for studying and presenting them in a concise
and accessible format (usually study guides stretch out each point they make... I
think so that the authors can publish multiple books that say the same thing but
in a slightly different convoluted way). Thank you for your contribution to
academia through your online study guide. If possible, please e-mail me when any
changes or additions are made to the guide. 4/1/02
I was searching for effective study guides online when I came
across this superb website of yours. Thank you for your effort that is put into
this website that has benefit me in many ways. I am sure that you will be rewarded
in time to come for your hard work as well as interest that has been put into
making this website. Well done! I hope that you will continue to update this
website so that more informative and applicable things will be found so that it
will benefit the world. Thank you! 3/31/02
HI Joe, I just wanted to say thanks for your informative pages.
I am student in the middle of writing a research paper on the stigma of mental
illness. Your pages have been of much help! I am 37--been out of school a few
years and they seemed to have developed a few new methods of documenting these
things! 3/26/02
We are pretty much contemporaries (I'm 55) and I was one of 600
New Jersey state workers recently fired by the new governor, Jim McGreevey. Trying
to make lemonade out of this situation (and with the support of my wonderful
husband!), I am trying to finish my final year of college through "distance
learning" and will hopefully receive my BSN next Spring. Since it has been some
time since I have had to write a term paper (about 35 or 36 years!) your web site
was a life preserver tossed to a drowning person! THANK YOU from the bottom of my
heart for helping me understand what is required "today" for term papers, and
giving such excellent advice! Just wanted you to know how much your efforts were
appreciated. (I have book marked your web page for future reference!) 3/26/02
Thank you for putting together this great website on studying
skills. I'm wondering if there are any links to listening in the classroom
skills? 3/1/02 under development!
I will be using this page to teach my middle school students
better ways to study. Thanks: this page is very useful. I will also be sending
this info to my daughter in college. 3/1/02
I have just started teaching and I just wanted say WOW! Your
study guide and strategy website is awesome. Sometimes I just feel like what else
could I say and you website has made me sigh with relief. Its great to have such
a tool. I am fascinated that you have accomplish so many things in life. I just
hope that someday I make such an impact in my community. 2/25/02
This is an excellent site and I'm sure all students would
benefit by adopting some ( or all ) of the techniques (depending on their
individual nature of course) and using the tools to assist them. I also thought it
rather strange that a site like the (New South Wales--Australia) Board of Studies
being so comprehensive and containing lots of useful info made it so hard to find
anything on the fundamentals of learning or studying. Sometimes we can't see the
forest for the trees. 2/7/02
You are a most dynamic person! I've truly enjoyed your website
in my search for test anxiety information. Thanks for the information and for the
glimpse into your incredible life. 2/18/02
Test anxiety: In public speaking they tell us to mentally
re-label the anxiety as excitement, and turn the fear into energy. This
could be rephrased to let kids know that the elevated heart rate is normal and
could become an advantage. For example, I find it's helpful to tell people
after car accidents that the adrenaline they are pumping out is normal human
reactions and not an injury. They feel terribly excited (fight or flight -
they want to LEAVE!) and then shaky and weak but it's oddly reassuring to be told
this is normal - not because they were bad, or hurt or evil, just another human.
If they know it's normal... 2/10/02
A really good site, keep up the great work, kind regards from
Australia... 2/6/02
I love the study guides and I am using them with my students who
are at risk youth in Buffalo, NY. My own two boys are also using them.
I find them easy to use because they are very direct and short....thanks for
posting these!! 2/6/02
A friend just passed on your study guide to me. I think it is
wonderful and want to personally thank you for investing your time in creating
something so helpful to so many. 1/30/02
I have a 10-year-old son, who received 2 D's on his report
yesterday. He was in tears. He cried and cried and asked what he was doing wrong
and in his words said, "Mom, will you teach me how to study better. I know I can
learn but I must be doing something wrong - I need you to help me". My quest
began. I found your site and spent the next 2 hours reading and reading. I have
this morning forwarded your link to everyone I know, including the Brother Vincent
the Principal at my son's school, and colleagues at work. I look forward to
working with my son and sharing with you the success stories that I'm sure will
follow. Thank you so much for the time, effort and for your enormous generosity.
1/29/02
I didn't see it on the web site but maybe you could give some
advise on how to take good timed tests. It seems you are focusing a lot on taking
your time, but I only have 100 minutes to take my exams, and they are 140
questions or more plus short answer and essays. It would be really helpful if
there was some part with tips for doing well in a short amount of time, I know
that a lot of people at my school would agree with me. Your web site has helped me
out a lot though!! I have tried many of the tips and they have not only helped me
succeed in tests but in life too!! Thank you soooo very much! 1/20/02
