I am so pleased that I found your Study Guides and Strategies web site.  I am currently participating in an accelerated certification program at West Texas A&M in Canyon, TX to prepare for my Texas ExCet tests this fall.  I will teach 6th grade Math/Science and Health this coming school year.  Part of my course work this summer requires me to plan a unit that covers Social Studies/Language Arts and Technology. The unit must also meet the guidelines stated in the Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills. I feel it is very important to teach my 6th graders study skills and time management skills in order to prepare them for entry into Junior High.  I also want to give them skills that will last a lifetime.  The unit I am currently working on involves introducing, presenting and practicing the above skills to my 6th graders.  7/26/02

Greetings from Oklahoma!  As a parent of an early elementary child (3rd grade, 8 years old) with ADHD, I surfed to find resources to help her (yes, her) with study habits, and came upon your link.  How wonderful to find a site promoting study habits.  Even greater, a site for ADHD students who need to develop study habits.   Please bear in mind that I'm new to finding things on the 'net. So there may be things I can use on the 'net with our daughter.  I found your site to be informative and full of items, suggestions for an older age.  I struggle to find basics for younger developmental needs.  Specifically, an  'assignments' page.  No frills or distractions.   I located one ... but there were too many confusing extras.  I do believe you are on a great track for helping ADHDers.  Some families just aren't up 'there' chronologically.  We need thing to reach our younger kids who desperately need tools to make learning a **positive** fun experience again   (not an extended pre-school type approach); a successful approach! 1/22/02

You should show examples on a specific type of essay.  For example, I am looking to write a persuasive essay.  You may have an example that shows what the first paragraph should include, the second, and so on.  That would be very helpful.  Other than that, it was very helpful! I am a 48 year old first year teacher (went back to college when my husband died 5 years ago) so I am mature enough to realize the importance of organization and understanding your own learning style. I am trying to design an after school program for 6th graders at my school - inner city school - immense need for this. I have been trying to print out your stuff, bring it down to a 6th grade level and create a powerpoint presentation for this class. I just wanted to tell you that I am using your site in my 7th grade Study Skills course and your pages (all of them) are clearly written and wonderful--the best collection of advice I've found, arranged in an appealingly visual way on the page. It has been helpful for you to reiterate points (like to review material early and often) repeatedly on different pages so that students get the point that repetition is an important part of study strategy. In addition, the pages on cramming are refreshing. I tell students that there are two separate goals: one is to do better on tests and get the desired grades, but the other is to have long-term use of knowledge, and THAT is the real goal. Repetition is seen as a waste of time to them.  The only thing I could possibly suggest is some material on how the brain works--how it remembers things and how diet, sleep, and exercise impact brain function. Kids (and college students) blow off that stuff. Perhaps the material is there and I just haven't located it on your web site. Thank you for sharing your pages with us. It is now the best source I have for written material on test prep and test taking. 10/16/02

I don't know how I found your website but, I'm glad I did.  I teach Learning Disabled and/or Emotionally Disabled middle school students.  My first class of the day is called Learning Activities, where I teach learning strategies, study skills, test-taking skills, etc.  I have adapted a few of your articles to my students' reading levels because these are kids who NEED direct instruction in those areas. 10/3/02

I'm a speech therapist in Calumet City, Illinois.   I teach grades 3rd thru 8th and I have 4 classes with students with many special ed. concerns.   This particular district is very poor and about 90% of our students are on federally funded breakfast and lunch programs.  Our school is currently under academic watch and we currently are undergoing a School Improvement program.  As I teach and observe my students, it's obvious that they don't know "how" to study.  I ran across your program today, LEARNING TO LEARN and was very impressed.  I started to print it but quickly realized that I need tons and tons of paper.   Is this program available in book or booklet form?  Can I purchase it at a bookstore or from your university?   Is there a possibility of your sending it to m?   I'd like to study it and then present it to my principal.  I'm sure that our staff would love that I could teach our students the mechanics of studying and then their scores would and could improve.  9/26/02  Publishing under consideration

Wow, I stumbled on to your Study Guides and Strategies site, and I am truly impressed (happens very rarely.) I am going to put a link to your page on my new web site, if you have no objections. (I know that it says that no link request is needed, but I would consider it an impropriety not to even mention it. I spent the summer trying (note the operative word TRYING) to learn how to build and maintain a web page for my students. I am still not in control, but that has never stopped me, and my seventh grade students love my site, (One of the many reasons I adore them) even on the occasions where I accidentally destroy parts of it! I have only perused a small part of your site, but I appreciate your (American) English Spelling page and teach principles very similar to yours. For the "silent" e rule, I teach the V-C-E pattern (vowel-consonant-silent e) and find that it is one of the cornerstones frequently overlooked, along with other spelling rules. My understanding is that 87% of the English language follows the rules; one would expect spelling to be far better, unless, of course, students are not taught the rules. Hmmmmm. Am I the only one to note a direct proportional relationship between the ages of my junior colleagues to their expertise in spelling, grammar, mechanics, etc.?  Thank you, in advance, and once again, my congratulations for a valuable and note-worthy site. 9/21/02

This is an excellent site and I'm sure all students would benefit by adopting some ( or all ) of the techniques (depending on their individual nature of course) and using the tools to assist them. I also thought it rather strange that a site like the (New South Wales--Australia) Board of Studies being so comprehensive and containing lots of useful info made it so hard to find anything on the fundamentals of learning or studying. Test anxiety:  In public speaking they tell us to mentally re-label the anxiety as excitement, and turn the fear into energy.  This could be rephrased to let kids know that the elevated heart rate is normal and could become an advantage.  For example, I find it's helpful to tell people after car accidents that the adrenaline they are pumping out is normal human reactions and not an injury.  They feel terribly excited (fight or flight - they want to LEAVE!) and then shaky and weak but it's oddly reassuring to be told this is normal - not because they were bad, or hurt or evil, just another human. If they know it's normal... 2/10/02

I didn't see it on the web site but maybe you could give some advise on how to take good timed tests. It seems you are focusing a lot on taking your time, but I only have 100 minutes to take my exams, and they are 140 questions or more plus short answer and essays. It would be really helpful if there was some part with tips for doing well in a short amount of time, I know that a lot of people at my school would agree with me. When you are studying for a test, you should never do it in one time. divide your study in sections, so you can understand the concepts of the things you are learning much more clearly. If you jam it up, you will not remember 1/4 as much as you are suppose to need on the test. 8/26/01

I am a teacher and subject coordinator in Sydney, Australia. Specifically a catholic secondary school. Two other teachers and I have been working on preparing a 10 week course for our students on study skills, memory retention, self motivation etc etc Your website is beyond excellent as a resource for what we are trying to establish, as the students do not have many of these skills, attitudes and knowledge. There is very little or no time to teach this during normal lessons. Obviously this is way beyond the requirements of the curriculum. 4/20/01
